Studies show that 50-70% of men have their first heart attack before they have any chest pain. There are two issues with the traditional treatment of LDL cholesterol. First, many people experience adverse effects with statin therapy, requiring alternative approaches via diet and supplements to get their LDL cholesterol levels under control. The second issue is LDL cholesterol evaluation. We need to be looking at LDL particle number and size as well as whether or not it’s been modified. LDL cholesterol modification can cause inflammation, oxidative stress, and finally vascular immune dysfunction. In this talk, Dr. Houston explains that if we can implement a targeted nutrition approach that attacks the mechanism by which LDL cholesterol causes atherosclerotic plaque development, we’re more likely to prevent a heart-related clinical event.
