Optimal Lifestyle Intervention for Patients with Diabetes: The Joslin Why WAIT Model

Why Wait stands for "Weight Achievement and Intensive Treatment," a 12-week multidisciplinary program for weight control and intensive diabetes management

This webinar is entitled “Optimal Lifestyle Intervention for Patients with Diabetes: The Joslin Why WAIT Model.” It is delivered by Osama Hamdy, the Medical Director of the Obesity Clinical Program at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, and also the creator of the Why WAIT program, clinically proven to support weight loss and glucose control among diabetic patients.

The “WAIT” in Why Wait stands for Weight Achievement and Intensive Treatment. It is a 12-week multidisciplinary program for weight control and intensive diabetes management that is offered to patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. According to Dr. Hamdy and the Why WAIT website, the program includes:

  • adjustments to diabetes medications to enhance weight reduction
  • a structured diet with regular food and meal replacements, following Joslin Nutrition Guidelines
  • weekly learning sessions
  • individualized exercise plan that gradually increases from 20 to 30 minutes/day (3 to 4 times/week) to 45 to 60 minutes/day (6 times/week)
